Residential and Commercial Building, Freiberg

Freiberg’s medieval town center is a completely preserved area and is under monument protection.

The property is located on the corner of two dissimilar streets – Meissner Gasse and Mönchstrasse. The existing building was demolished in the 1990s. The centuries old vaulted cellar has been retained and conserved.

The new building preserves the existing appearance and atmosphere of the Meißner Gasse and at the same time complements the sparsely built-up Mönchstrasse. As a result, the building was conceived as a zone of both separation and connection between the two streets of completely different character. The building contains medical practices and apartments. The interweaving of interior and exterior spaces takes place in the inner courtyard, which begins with the green roof of the ground floor and spreads through the green roofs and terraces of the apartments on the upper floors, gradually opening towards the sky.

The specific elements that have characterized the Meissner Gasse – massive walls with vertical openings, steep gabled roofs with dormers, rhythm and scale of the street – have been applied in the design of the facades and interpreted in a contemporary way.
